This scholarship will provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are passionate about improving birth outcomes for their community with a full scholarship, enabling them to complete their training to become a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, including all related fees for study materials and certification exam registration. 

In childbirth, systemic racism is the root cause of disparities leading to higher maternal mortality rates for First Nations women as well as women from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds. Culturally appropriate childbirth education delivered by women from their own communities improves outcomes and makes a difference in more positive birth experiences. Childbirth educators are an essential part of collaborative, respectful quality care. 

Lamaze Australia is committed to advancing racial and social justice by supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators and advocates. Through dedicated scholarship opportunities, we aim to empower First Nations leaders who are working to strengthen their communities by delivering evidence-based, culturally grounded childbirth education that reflects and respects Indigenous knowledge, self-determination, and care practices.

In 2026, two live, online Lamaze Childbirth Educator training programs will be offered.

Applicants may apply to either training.

What the scholarship covers:

• Training cost to attend the 5-day Lamaze Childbirth Educator training program and on-going online study sessions throughout the year

• Funds to cover the purchase of the Lamaze Learning Guide

• Funds to cover the exam registration fee, membership and certification fees with Lamaze International

What is not covered:

• Any transportation to and from the training, including petrol, tolls, public transport and airfares

• Any accommodation costs or expenses

• Daily living expenses, such as food and beverage

• Travel insurance (if required)

• Future fees associated with re-certification with Lamaze International

• Any additional study materials that the student wishes to purchase
